Membership and Governance
Membership
The Pod was set up in 2013 by parents of children with additional needs and became a CIO – Registered Charity in March 2015. The Pod continues to be a user led charity and we ask that anyone who wishes to access Pod services supports our work and becomes a member. (Members must be aged 18+)
It is important that we have the support of Parent Carers ‘Members’ if we are to maintain the services run by Pod however membership is also open to people in the community who wish to stay connected to activities and support our work.
Becoming a member enables Pod to provide reduced cost to families for weekly sessions, you will also;
- Enjoy Priority booking and reduced priced activities – there are 2 prices for additional activities (for example; a holiday activity session ‘may’ cost £10 for members, non-members may pay £15)
- Have a say in how the Pod develops, support the charities activities and vote on decisions.
Family membership runs from September until August, the membership fee will be £15. Family membership includes all children in the home who are aged 17 and under.
Membership for anyone aged 18+ is £12 annually.
Governance
We have amazing trustees who are all passionate about The Pod and ensuring its success. The trustees all bring to the table a different set of skills and experience that ensures the Pod is as strong as it can possibly be. Trustees meet quarterly. Depending on their area of responsibility additional meetings take place between trustees and the Charity Manager at regular intervals
We are fortunate to have professional trustees, some of whom are also parent carers themselves, with an understanding of the challenges the Pod community faces. The trustees are local and understand the area and its characteristics.
If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a trustee please use the contact form.
Moira Spence
Chair of Trustees
I am the current chair of the trustee board for The Pod , I was elected in 2022.
Professionally , I work as a certified coach and Enneagram trainer. My background is health, firstly as a nurse and midwife and then in senior hospital management.
After many years of living outside the UK I moved to Frome with my son in 2020. I had the good fortune to find out about Pod Plus very soon after arriving here.
Attending Pod Plus allowed my son to feel engaged, involved and accepted.
All the Pod services offer crucial, life enhancing contact for people with additional needs. They offer spaces of belonging and acceptance, alongside skills development and fun.
It is a privilege to be supporting this important work which is carried out by our staff and volunteers.
Sarah Drake
Treasurer
I am a self-employed bookkeeper who has always loved numbers! I have been treasurer of The Pod since 2014. I have 2 sons, the youngest has Autism and associated learning difficulties and is now accessing adult services. I previously ran the Frome Autistic Support Team (FAST) a local support group, providing organised day trips for families during the school holidays for almost 20 years until the pandemic. I was on a steering group to enable a new free school for children with autism and social and communication difficulties to be built in the Mendip area. I am proud of my role with The Pod and am excited for what the future holds for this wonderful charity.
Zeta O'Gorman
Trustee
I first came across the Pod in 2021 and shortly after became a trustee. Professionally i’m a counsellor working with severe trauma and general mental health. Prior to this i spent 10 years working in adult social care as a senior support worker. I have 3 children, two of which have additional needs.
I am passionate about empowering everyone to be able to access their community, this is what drew me to Pod as a charity and I feel very lucky to be a part of this wonderful charity.
Deb Killah
Trustee
I have lived in Frome for over 30 years and have worked as practitioner in local schools supporting children who have additional needs. I use this experience and my community links to offer the charity help in furthering its connections and the communities understanding of what the Pod offers the children, young people and families we support.
This is an exciting opportunity and I am looking forward to helping the charity grow and evolve.
Michael Rhodes
Trustee
I was honoured to be approached by The Pod and asked to consider becoming a trustee of the charity. The work of The Pod is close to my heart and I have been impressed at how people are involved and supported at events I have helped with over the last year or so, such as the Silent Disco and Scrapstore. I grew up with a brother who has a learning disability and have a passion that those with additional needs have opportunities to thrive and live the lives they want. I have a professional background in managing and developing health and social care services, mainly those supporting children and adults with learning disabilities and autism. I have been an active member of the community in Frome for over 30 years.
